Starting off at Grand Casemates Square, where you will also find some of the best shopping in Gibraltar, you can get a real sense of the city’s past. Rebuilt by the British after sustaining heavy damage in the siege of 1727, the square is a fantastic starting from which to explore other Gibraltar attractions. The Cathedral of Saint Mary the Crowned is one of the most popular and breathtaking Gibraltar attractions. Built by the Spanish in 1462 on the site of the old Mosque and rebuilt after the Great Siege of 1810 its high altar, made from Italian marble and intricately decorated windows, will take your breath away.
The Gibraltar Museum is a must-visit when Gibraltar sightseeing. Situated in an old 18th century bomb house, its collections range from military exhibits to archeological finds such as the first skull of an ‘ape-man’ ever discovered, which was found in Gibraltar in 1848. The Medieval Moorish Baths also stand within the museum, its sixteen-sided vaulted roof and beautifully preserved polished columns make the baths one of the finest examples of their kind in Europe.
A visit to the southern area of Gibraltar, away from the city will yield some of its best attractions. The Alameda Botanic Gardens and Wildlife Park is a wonderful place to catch your breath and take in the sun surrounded by stunning flora and fauna and an array of bird, reptile and insect life. While on the east side of Gibraltar you will find the eastern beach one of Gibraltar’s most popular attractions, a beautiful small, sandy beach perfect for whiling away the hours in the sunshine.
